Mixed reality fire extinguisher training
Real extinguishers, virtual fires, and the trainee's own workplace: fire training that THG Labs now runs entirely on their own.
THG Labs wanted fire extinguisher training that happens where fires would actually happen: in their own facility. We built a mixed reality experience in which trainees pick up real extinguishers and tackle virtual fires overlaid on the real workplace around them.
Traditional extinguisher training tends to happen away from the workplace, with live fires in a car park or a generic training environment. It teaches the principle, but not the place. And because live burns are costly to stage, most staff get the experience rarely, if at all.
THG Labs recognised that mixed reality could put realistic practice inside their own building, and asked us to build it.
A mixed reality training experience for Meta Quest 3. Trainees see their real environment through passthrough, with virtual fires rendered into the space around them. The extinguisher in their hands is a real one, tracked as a controller, so aiming, sweeping, and handling all carry over from training to reality.
The experience runs in single-player for individual practice and multiplayer for group sessions, with a trainer able to observe and run the session.
We handed the system over in April 2026 after on-site testing, and THG Labs now runs their training with it independently.
