BELRON, VR WINDSCREEN BONDING TRAINER

VR windscreen bonding trainer

Technicians practise windscreen adhesive application with a real applicator gun and a virtual windscreen, so no glass, adhesive, or vehicles are used up in training.

For Belron, the world's largest vehicle glass repair and replacement group, the quality of a windscreen fit comes down to technique: how consistently a technician lays the bead of polyurethane adhesive that bonds the glass to the vehicle. We built a VR trainer that lets technicians practise exactly that. The applicator gun in their hands is real. The windscreen aperture, the adhesive bead, and the guidance are virtual.

Practising adhesive application in the real world is expensive by design. Every practice run consumes adhesive, and realistic practice needs glass and vehicles too. That limits how often technicians can rehearse the skill, and makes it hard to compare technique consistently across a large, international workforce.

Belron saw the opportunity to train and assess this core skill without the consumables, and asked us to build it.

A VR training experience for Meta Quest 3 built around a real, tracked adhesive applicator gun, so the tool in the technician's hands weighs and handles like the one they use on the job. In the headset, they apply a bead to a virtual windscreen aperture, with a guide line showing where the bead should sit.

Because the vehicle and adhesive are virtual, technicians can repeat the exercise as many times as they need, and trainers can compare technique between technicians on a like-for-like basis.

The trainer has been deployed internationally with O'Brien, Belron's Australian brand, including a localised applicator variant, custom branding, and a leaderboard used for skills competition.

The trainer is in use for technician skills comparison across Belron brands, and its international deployment with O'Brien in Australia added a localised applicator variant, custom branding, and a competition leaderboard.
