Immersive workshop familiarisation

Toyota GB runs a national apprenticeship programme, and its technicians sit practical assessments in a dedicated workshop. We built a multi-platform familiarisation experience that lets apprentices explore that workshop in advance: in VR on Meta Quest, on iPad and Android tablet, and at an AR workbench.

The challenge

Practical assessment days carry pressure, and much of it has nothing to do with competence. Walking into an unfamiliar workshop, apprentices spend energy working out where things are rather than settling into what they can do. Toyota GB saw the opportunity to remove that unknown, and asked us how immersive technology could let apprentices familiarise themselves with the assessment environment before arriving.

What we built

A faithful virtual version of the assessment workshop, delivered on three platforms so every apprentice can prepare in the way that suits them: full VR on Meta Quest, an iPad and Android tablet version, and an AR workbench. Apprentices move around the bay, find the equipment, and get comfortable with the layout at their own pace.

Each apprentice signs in individually, and an analytics dashboard shows Toyota GB who has explored the workshop and how. The experience was rolled out to devices across the network through device management in September and October 2025, and piloted with control groups to understand its effect on familiarity and confidence.

The outcome

The experience deployed across the network in autumn 2025. Pilot feedback was strong on every platform, with tablet users reporting almost as much benefit as those in VR, validating the multi-platform design.
